OPEN TO JUNIORS, AMATEURS, AND PROFESSIONALS
This judging and course design educational clinic opportunity is open to the entire CHJA membership (Juniors, Amateurs, and Professionals). The goals of these educational opportunities are to create more knowledgeable competitors in the show ring and to give the membership an opportunity to explore other careers in the Hunter/Jumper industry.
This program is open for application for any CHJA member (junior, amateur, or professional) who was a member in good standing as of April 15, 2025. Each selected CHJA member recipient will receive a spot in either a judging or course design clinic. Clinic registration fees will be covered, along with a $500 stipend to help offset airfare and accommodation expenses.
Applications open June 16, 2025 and close on July 7, 2025.
CHJA will send up to two (2) CHJA members to Julie Winkle’s Maplewood Farm in Reno, NV for these clinics. Please note dates for each clinic are fixed.

Course Design Clinic September 7-8, 2025 - Clinician Linda Allen
Linda Allen is an Olympic course designer and an internationally recognized clinician on riding, show jumping, and course design. She is a former rider for the United States in international jumping competitions, and she designed the show-jumping courses for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as for other major international competitions. For this special course design clinic, participants will start with a classroom session over dinner on the first evening. The second day will start with continued classroom discussion, followed by hands-on course design. Participants then will observe a Jumper Schooling Show over the course they designed and built. The clinic will also cover practical advice for walking courses. Analysis and discussion will take place after observing horses jumping the various tracks and lines designed by participants.

Julie Winkel is one of the foremost trainers, judges, clinicians and educators in the country. She's held her United States Equestrian Federation R-rated judging licenses in Hunter, Hunter Breeding and Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation since 1984 and has presided over many of the country's most prestigious horse shows. This clinic is intended to take the mystery out of judging Hunters and Equitation and allows one to understand step-by-step the processes involved in judging. Participants will learn how judges keep their cards and the process of scoring, and will take part in live judging of conformation, under saddle and jumping classes. Through the clinic one will receive valuable insight into how the United States Hunter Jumper Association and the United States Equestrian Federation prepare and educate their licensed officials.

Through this application program, the CHJA education committee will review each application and select two (2) CHJA members to travel to Maplewood Stables.
Each CHJA member selected will receive a spot in either a judging or course design clinic and up to a $500 stipend for their trip to be reimbursed upon completion. Upon return, each CHJA member recipient will have a follow up questionnaire to complete.How to apply

Selection Process
