December marks the start of the 2018 show season. We sat down with CHJA's Member Support Manager Kirsten Turner to talk about all things related to your CHJA membership.
CHJA: When does our CHJA membership renew?
KIRSTEN TURNER: Your membership is effective the day that you renew it online or in person so make sure to renew/join before you begin showing. The CHJA year begins December 1 and ends November 30 so you have an entire year to accrue points at CHJA approved shows.
CHJA: How do I know what age category I’m in?
KT: Your CHJA competition age is how old you are as of the beginning of that CHJA show season. So for the 2018 show year, it would be your age as of 12/1/2017. We've also added a proof of age rule change so that if there is ever any question as to a rider's age, we can follow up and ensure that he or she is competing in the proper age group. The rule states: Riders must provide government approved proof of age upon request of the Member Support Manager.
CHJA: If I’m a member is my horse automatically a member?
KT: No, your horse recording/membership is different than yours. In order for Hunter/Jumper points to count, both horse and owner need to be current with CHJA while for Equitation/Medal points to count, only the rider needs to be current with CHJA. Did you know that if the horse/owner are current members but the rider is not that the rider's name won't be displayed on the CHJA website Standings and Results pages? Only current members will be displayed.
CHJA: What happens if I sell my horse to another CHJA member? Does that horse’s membership transfer to the new owner for the remainder of the show season?
KT: A horse can be transferred to a new owner for a small fee of $10, and this can all be done on our CHJA website.
CHJA: How can I be sure I am accruing points on my leased horse?
KT: You can register a leased horse by providing a copy of the lease to CHJA so that you can being accruing points. As long as you are listed as the lessee, the horse recording is current and your membership is current with CHJA, then your points will count.
